Mrs. Steele is the Librarian and
Computer Teacher. She is also the mother of two SBS graduates, aunt to two graduates and
a current student, and wife of an alumnus!
She frequently feels like a weird sort of “Hair Club” commercial.
Mrs. Steele has been a voracious reader all her life. She
spent countless hours as a child with her books, traveling to far off places,
learning lots of new things, and becoming the font of knowledge that she remains
today. She feels that it is her mission in life to pass her love of reading
along to everyone she meets.
Mrs. Steele’s computer experience dates back to the 1970’s
when she was employed by Dictaphone Corporation as Data and Media Librarian, and
computer operator. At that time, computers took up rooms as large as our school
library. She worked with the first IBM desktop computer, which was as large as
two of our student desks put together. The screen was a massive 6” square and
had no color! Removable media at that time meant giant rolls of magnetic tape
weighing approximately 5 pounds each. Data was input via trays of punched cards
that sometime numbered in the tens of thousands. Needless to say, she is happy
that technology has made her job much easier, not to mention more portable.
Mrs. Steele also spent years traveling around the United
States for a software company, training clients in the use of the computer and
the company’s software. Her favorite parts of her territory were Georgia, Ohio,
and Tennessee.
Mrs. Steele worked for many years for the Hagaman Memorial
Library in East Haven, where she was the head of the Technical Services
Department, responsible for ordering and cataloging all library materials. She
also worked in the Circulation and Reference departments, and assisted
home-schooled families with their curriculum. Sort of a “Jane of All Trades”
job!
Mrs. Steele says her favorite job of all has been working
with the children of St. Bernadette School.
