Welcome to Second Grade

Academic Year 2011-2011

Mrs. Florio

As summer winds down and signs of fall begin to appear we start the school year with eagerness and anticipation. The second grade curriculum is challenging. We will focus on developing a wide range of reading skills and strategies through the use of literature. Phonics and spelling will relate to our weekly reading selection. The children will also be provided with many creative writing experiences and a wide range of math activities including counting money, telling time and adding and subtracting with regrouping.

Along with academics, we will continue our spiritual journey by recognizing the many gifts God has given us. We will learn about the sacraments and the parts of the mass. We will also participate in the Thanksgiving Prayer service and the school Mass in May. As always, we learn to treat others with respect and to do good things for others.

The special schedule has changed from last year and is as follows:

 Mon. Library

Tues. Gym

Wed. Music

Thurs.  Art

Fri.  Spanish

A homework packet will be distributed on the first school day of the week. It will contain the homework for the entire week. Please read the instructions carefully and return the completed packet in the folder on the last school day of the week. A list of the 15 weekly spelling words is contained in the packet. Spelling tests are given on Friday.

I am looking forward to getting to know my new students and their families and to having an exciting and successful school year.
