Math

Grade Five Homeroom

Mrs. Russo

I am looking forward to an exciting new year. Over the summer, I would like your child to complete a math packet. This math packet is used by public schools for CMT practice. I would like to use it to determine the strengths and weakness of the students. I have been sending home math packets for the 7th graders for the last two years and have gotten some valuable information as to what we needed to concentrate on. I think it will be very useful for the upcoming 5th graders. You can assist your child in completing the packet by making it part of their daily routine. This packet will be due the first week of school and counted as an assignment. Besides completing the math packet, your child should know his/her multiplication tables and be able to recite them without hesitation.
Reading is an important activity to continue throughout the summer. I have assigned two books for their summer reading. The books are Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins and The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies. I would also like you to read books that you like and record what you have read on the Summer Reading Log. This will give me an idea of what you like to read and how much you read.

Gregor the Overlander is the first of five books in the Underland Chronicles. For this book, I would like each student to use the story guide included in this packet as a guide to understanding the story. This story guide does not need to be completely filled in. The students can take notes on this packet or might verbally review the questions once they have finished reading each chapter. However, I would like each student to create a name for each chapter since the chapters are only given a number. We will be discussing this book the first week of school.

The Lemonade War is about a brother and sister and their war. For this book, I would like each student to create a journal/scrapbook. They will choose a character from the book and become that individual. We will share these journal/scrapbooks during the first week of school.   The details and a rubric for this assignment are included.
